MCC seat in hand, state result coming: what now?
Based on MCC’s NEET-PG Counselling 2026 Information Bulletin, which has MCC and the states share lists of who has joined and removes anyone on a state’s post-Round-3 list before the stray round. Not legal advice; check the current bulletin.
MCC and your state run two separate counsellings on overlapping dates, and after each round they swap lists of who has joined where. Most of the real losses in a season happen in the gap between the two: an MCC seat resigned a day late, a state seat reported to while an MCC seat was still held, or a Round 3 seat joined without realising it closed every other door. Answer the four questions.

- Round 1 has a free exit. An MCC Round 1 seat can be left, or resigned before Round 2, with the security deposit refunded.
- From Round 2 on, leaving costs the deposit. A Round 2 seat not joined, or resigned, forfeits it.
- A joined Round 3 seat is final. No upgrade, no resignation. Not joining a Round 3 allotment forfeits the deposit and ends your MCC season.
- The exchange reaches the stray round. Be on a state’s list after its Round 3 and you are out of MCC’s stray round.
- Resignation only counts when it is recorded on MCC’s portal, inside its window. A Float candidate resigns online; a Freeze candidate resigns at the allotted institute. A letter on its own is not accepted, and the states read MCC’s list.

Every possible situation
The same answers the four questions give, written out for every case. “Holding” a seat means you have joined it (reported to the college). Where a case names dates to check, find them on the NEET-PG counselling calendar.
No MCC seat joined and the state result is not out yet
No seat held: keep both doors open.
- You hold no MCC seat, so nothing needs resigning. Register on both systems, fill both lists, and take the better of what comes.
- If MCC allots you a Round 1 seat before the state result, join it only if you would keep it; Round 1 is the one round with a free exit (no deposit lost if you do not join).
- Do not skip a safe MCC Round 1 seat hoping for a better state seat unless the state result is already out.

No MCC seat joined and the state result is out
No seat held: keep both doors open.
- You hold no MCC seat, so nothing needs resigning. Register on both systems, fill both lists, and take the better of what comes.
- Do not skip a safe MCC Round 1 seat hoping for a better state seat unless the state result is already out.

Holding an MCC Round 1 seat and the state result is not out yet
Hold the Round 1 seat, watch the resignation date.
- You hold an MCC Round 1 seat and the state result is not out. Keep the seat; a resignation now gives up something certain for something unknown.
- Round 1 seats have a free exit before Round 2 (deposit refunded). Once Round 2 runs, an unjoined or resigned seat costs the deposit.
- Mark the MCC resignation deadline now. The state result can land close to it, and an extension is never certain, so plan as if the deadline will hold.

Holding an MCC Round 1 seat, the state result is out and you want the state seat
Resign the MCC Round 1 seat in time, then join the state seat.
- You prefer the state seat. Resign the MCC Round 1 seat through MCC's portal BEFORE the resignation window closes; only then does MCC drop you from the joined list it sends the states.
- Resigning a Round 1 seat before Round 2 refunds the deposit.
- Then report to the state seat inside its own reporting window with every document in original.

Holding an MCC Round 1 seat (gave your willingness to upgrade (Float)), the state result is out and you want to keep the MCC seat
Keep the MCC seat, let the state seat go.
- You prefer the MCC seat. Keep it. Do not report to the state seat; check that state's own rule on non-joining.
- You gave your willingness to upgrade (Float), so MCC Round 2 may move you; the old seat is cancelled automatically when that happens.

Holding an MCC Round 1 seat (did not give your willingness to upgrade (Freeze)), the state result is out and you want to keep the MCC seat
Keep the MCC seat, let the state seat go.
- You prefer the MCC seat. Keep it. Do not report to the state seat; check that state's own rule on non-joining.

Holding an MCC Round 1 seat, the state result is out and you are not sure which seat you want
Decide before the MCC resignation deadline.
- Compare the two seats on the report: closing-rank margin, fee, bond, stipend and what residents say. Decide before the MCC resignation deadline, not after.
- A Round 1 seat can still be resigned with the deposit refunded, so the cost of choosing the state seat is zero until Round 2 runs.
- Whatever you choose, never hold both past the deadline: the MCC-state data exchange will cancel one of them for you, and not the one you would have picked.

Holding an MCC Round 3 seat
Round 3 seat joined: it is final.
- A joined MCC Round 3 seat is final: no upgrade, no resignation. MCC and the states share lists of who has joined, so read your state's own rule on holding an MCC seat during its Round 3.
- If you did not actually join the Round 3 seat, you lose the security deposit and are out of MCC's further rounds. Check your state's own rule on non-joining.
