What a bad rank actually costs you
Read this part in the morning if you cannot read it now.
A bad rank is not a verdict on you as a doctor. NEET-PG runs again in months, not years, and plenty of the residents you will work under got their seat on a second or third attempt. The branch at the end of it is the same branch, with the same degree and the same right to practise.
Almost nobody you work alongside in ten years will know your rank, or which attempt got you the seat. It is not on the degree and it does not come up. A year is long at twenty-six and very short across forty.
And a rank that looked like nothing at 11pm often has real options further down the list than you thought — that is what the rest of this site is for, when you are ready to look. Not tonight.
None of that makes tonight smaller. It just means tonight is not the whole thing, and you are being asked to judge a career on the worst four hours of it.
The hours right after
- Make no decision about your future tonight. Nothing needs deciding before morning, and a result read at 11pm is read at its worst.
- Tell one person before you tell the group chat. One person who will pick up, not sixty who will compare marks.
- Eat something and sleep if sleep will come. Your judgement on four hours of sleep and a bad result is not your judgement.
- If you are alone in a hostel room or a rented flat, go and sit where other people are, even if you do not talk to them.
If you are worried about someone else
Ask them directly. Not gently, not around the edges — directly:
Are you thinking about ending your life?
Asking does not put the idea into anyone’s head. That is settled, and the question is very often a relief to be asked. What you do next matters more than how well you phrase it:
- Do not leave them alone, and do not agree to keep it a secret. That is the one promise you are allowed to break.
- Do not just hand over the number — make the call with them and stay while it rings.
- Tell someone with standing: a senior, a warden, a parent, the head of unit. Being resented for a fortnight is an acceptable price.
- Consoling someone by pointing out that others also did badly does not reach the person who has decided the result is about them.
Why this page is here
FindMyBranch exists to tell candidates what their rank can realistically get them. That work is only worth anything to people who are still here to use it.
Result season in medicine carries a weight that people outside it do not see: years of preparation collapsing into one number, read alone, at night, in a room full of people revising for the same thing. This page stays up all year, not only in the weeks when the reason for it is obvious.
