MCC MDS seat in hand, state result coming: what now?
Based on MCC’s NEET-MDS Counselling 2026 bulletin and notices (listed under Sources). Your state’s own rules decide the state side. Not legal advice; check the current documents.
MCC and your state run two separate MDS counsellings on overlapping dates. After each round they swap lists of who has joined where. Most losses happen in the gap between the two: an MCC seat left in the wrong round, a resignation not done online, or a Round 3 seat joined without knowing it closes every other MCC door.

Check my MDS optionsThe rules behind every answer
- The running round’s rules apply. Once a round starts, its rules apply to everyone, even to a seat from an earlier round.
- Round 1 has a free exit. Leaving a Round 1 seat in Round 1 costs nothing.
- From Round 2 on, leaving costs the deposit. ₹25,000 or ₹10,000 for All India Quota seats, depending on category, and ₹2,00,000 if you registered for deemed universities.
- A joined Round 3 seat is final. No resignation, no upgrade, no later MCC round. Not joining a Round 3 allotment costs the deposit and ends your MCC season.
- The lists are shared both ways. MCC gives the states the list of candidates who joined in Rounds 1, 2 and 3, and the states give theirs to MCC. The same happens after the stray round.
- Resignation counts only if it is done online. A Freeze candidate resigns in person at the college, which records it on MCC’s portal. A Float candidate resigns from their own login. A paper resignation is not accepted, and the seat is not treated as given up.
- To join a state seat, you give up the MCC seat. MCC’s own flow chart says so, and you then have no claim on the MCC seat.
Situation by situation
You hold an MCC Round 1 seat and want the state seat
- Leaving it is free while Round 1 is running. Resign it within the time MCC’s schedule gives.
- Freeze: resign at the college in person. Float: resign online from your login and download the withdrawal letter.
- Do not wait. Once Round 2 starts, Round 2 rules apply to your seat too. In 2026, MCC’s later resignation window for Round 1 and Round 2 seats (26 to 30 September) was with forfeiture of the deposit.
You hold an MCC Round 2 seat and want the state seat
- Leaving it costs your security deposit.
- Resign the way MCC sets for your status (Freeze in person, Float online), inside MCC’s window.
- Once you join the state seat, the shared lists can keep you out of MCC’s Round 3 and stray round.
You have an MCC Round 3 seat
- If you join it, it is final: you cannot resign it, and you cannot take part in any later MCC round.
- If you do not join it, you lose your deposit and you are out of all further MCC rounds.
- So decide before you join. If a state seat you prefer is still possible, weigh it now, not after you have joined the Round 3 seat.
You hold a state seat and MCC’s Round 3 or stray round is coming
- MCC lists candidates holding a state quota seat (from the data the states share) who are not willing to upgrade as not eligible for Round 3.
- Before the stray round, MCC removes everyone holding a seat from Rounds 1 to 3, and anyone on a state’s list of allotted candidates.
- Whether and how you can leave the state seat, and what it costs, is your state’s rule. Read its notice.
You have no seat yet
- You can still register fresh for MCC’s Round 3 or the stray round, with the fee. Registered candidates with no seat in Rounds 1 and 2 do not register again for Round 3.
- If you join a state seat first, you will be removed from MCC’s stray round.
Before you decide: money and bond
- MCC does not fix fees. Tuition fee, stipend, service bond and rural service rules vary by state and college. An All India Quota seat in a state college can carry that state’s bond.
- Charges a college takes when you upgrade or resign are the college’s own. Ask before you join.
- Dates for each round are on mcc.nic.in and on your state’s counselling site. Put both sets side by side before you act.
