NEET-MDS choice filling: how many choices, and in what order
Based on MCC’s NEET-MDS Counselling 2026 bulletin and candidate user guide (listed under Sources). Always check mcc.nic.in. FindMyBranch is not part of MCC.

Check my MDS optionsHow MCC reads your list
MCC’s allotment is done by computer, with no manual step. It goes in order of merit: the best rank first. For each candidate it reads the list from the top and gives the first seat on it that is still free. So the order of your list is everything. A “safe” choice placed above your dream choice costs you the dream, because the computer stops at the safe one first.
How many choices?
- There is no limit. MCC’s bulletin advises 30 to 40 choices, in your order of preference.
- Only add seats you would really join. From Round 2 on, a seat you are given and do not join costs your security deposit. In Round 3 it also ends your MCC counselling. See MDS free exit and security deposit.
- If every seat on your list is gone before your turn comes, you get no seat in that round.
Before you start
- Pay first. MCC opens choice filling only after the full registration fee and deposit are paid.
- Know which seats you applied for. At registration you pick the sections you want, such as All India Quota, a university internal quota, deemed universities or Armed Forces. Deemed university seats need the deemed amounts: ₹5,000 fee and ₹2,00,000 deposit.
- Read the seat matrix and prepare a tentative list first. MCC suggests this before you fill choices online.
- Check fee, bond and stipend with the college. MCC does not fix fees and takes no responsibility for them. It asks you to confirm the fee before filling choices, especially for deemed universities, and warns that some All India Quota colleges may also have a high fee.
- Internal quota seats (DU, AMU, BHU): confirm you meet the university’s own rule first. Wrong eligibility information cancels your candidature and costs your deposit.
- PwD seats are shown only to candidates who got their Eligibility Certificate online from an MCC board before choice filling starts.
- NRI seats are shown only after MCC has checked your NRI documents online.
- All India and internal quota seats are on one list. MCC uses the same software for both, so put them in a single order of preference.
What order? Dream, moderate, safe
- Dream seats first. Seats whose past closing rank (the rank of the last person who got it) was better than your rank. It costs nothing to try, because the computer only moves down your list if they are gone.
- Moderate seats next. Seats whose past closing rank was close to your rank.
- Safe seats last. Seats whose past closing rank was well past your rank. They catch you if everything above is taken.
Inside each group, put seats in the order you truly want them. MCC itself says past allotment results are only a guide, with no guarantee for this year; see how to read a NEET-MDS closing rank.
A deemed university seat is a paid seat, and the college sets its fee. Decide where it goes in your order only after you know that fee.
An example list (made up)
This is only an example. The colleges below are not real and the order is not advice for your rank. It shows the shape of a good list: dream at the top, safe at the bottom.
| # | Group | Choice (example only) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Dream | Example Government Dental College A, MDS Orthodontics (All India Quota) |
| 2 | Dream | Example Government Dental College B, MDS Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (All India Quota) |
| 3 | Moderate | Example Government Dental College C, MDS Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics (All India Quota) |
| 4 | Moderate | Example Government Dental College D, MDS Prosthodontics (All India Quota) |
| 5 | Moderate | Example Deemed University E, MDS Orthodontics (paid seat) |
| 6 | Safe | Example Government Dental College F, MDS Periodontology (All India Quota) |
| 7 | Safe | Example Deemed University G, MDS Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics (paid seat) |
Saving and locking
- Until you lock, you can add, delete and move choices.
- You lock your choices with an OTP sent to your registered mobile number or email.
- If you do not lock them, the system locks whatever is saved at the deadline. Once locked, nobody can change them, not even MCC.
- After locking, print or save your locked choice letter from your login.
- Do not wait for the last minute. Check the list once more before you lock it.
Every round is a fresh list
- You fill fresh choices in Round 2, Round 3 and the stray round. Your earlier list is not used.
- In Round 2 and Round 3 you also see virtual vacancies: seats held by Float candidates. You can put them on your list, but you get one only if its holder moves up.
- Float but want to keep your seat? Fill no choices in the next round, and your current seat stays yours. A better seat in the next round cancels your earlier seat straight away.
- An upgrade can also be in the same college, for example from an OBC seat to an open seat. You then take fresh admission on the new seat.
- In Round 3, unfilled reserved seats can change group (for example, an unfilled SC seat becomes open). See Round 3 and the stray round.
Mistakes that cost seats
- Safe seats at the top. The computer gives you the first free seat, so you get the safe one and never reach your better choices.
- Adding seats you would not join. From Round 2 on, not joining costs your deposit. In Round 3, it also ends your MCC counselling.
- Not locking, or locking in a hurry. A locked list cannot be changed, even if it has a mistake.
- Choosing Float, then filling choices you did not mean. A better seat cancels your old one at once. If you want to keep your seat, fill nothing.
- Not checking fees and bonds. They are set by each college and state, not by MCC. Check before you add a seat.
- Claiming an internal or minority quota you are not eligible for. It can cancel your candidature and cost your deposit.
Sort your seats with FindMyBranch
The MDS options page checks your NEET-MDS rank and category against the official allotment results and sorts the seats into very likely, possible and hard. Paid seats are tagged and never mixed with government seats, and you can sort by your own branch order. Use the three groups as your safe, moderate and dream bands. It does not fill choices for you: write your list out and enter it on MCC’s choice-filling page yourself.
Start with your rank. See your very likely, possible and hard MDS seats.
